HOW THE
SYSTEM WORKS
-
DRIVER BEHAVIORA study of multiple busy intersections prior to the installation of red light cameras showed that, on average, a motorist ran a red light every 20 minutes. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Photo enforcement has been in use in the U.S. for more than 30 years. A review of international red light camera studies revealed that cameras reduced red light violations by 40-50% and injury in crashes by 25-30%. Nearly 335 communities across 23 states use red light cameras. Almost all drivers (96%) fear being struck by a red light runner. A majority of Americans admit to running red lights. 1 in 3 Americans knows someone who has been injured or killed in a red light running crash.

VEHICULAR FATALITIESIn the US a total of 42,939 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2021. In Illinois there were 1,217 fatal crashes in 2021, with 1,341 deaths. 28% of crash-related deaths that occur at signalized intersections are the result of drivers running through red lights. On average, 2 people die each day in red light running crashes in the US. Close to $400 million dollars is spent each month on emergency services, In 2021, 1,109 people were killed and 127,000 injured in red light running crashes. Half of those killed were pedestrians, cyclists and people in other vehicles who were hit by the red light runners. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that cameras reduced the fatal red light running crash rate of large cities by 21% and the rate of all types of fatal crashes at signalized intersections by 14%.

RED LIGHT CAMERA PROGRAMAllTech’s red light camera program costs ONLY those who BREAK THE LAW. The goal of a red light camera enforcement system is to improve public safety for drivers and pedestrians. Red light cameras help reduce fatalities and injury-related car crashes at intersections. Red light cameras help reinforce safe driver behavior. Red light cameras allow police officers more time for community policing. Red light camera violations are considered “non-moving” violations and are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle regardless of who committed the violation. Red light camera violations do not affect the violator’s driving record. Before a violation notice is issued and mailed out, video of the possible violation has been reviewed by municipal law enforcement personnel and support technicians at least four times.
