A study of multiple busy intersections prior to the installation of red light cameras showed that, on average, a motorist ran a red light every 20 minutes. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Photo enforcement has been in use in the U.S. for more than 30 years. A review of international red light camera studies revealed that cameras reduced red light violations by 40-50% and injury in crashes by 25-30%. In Illinois there were 1,217 fatal crashes in 2021, with 1,341 deaths. 28% of crash-related deaths that occur at signalized intersections are the result of drivers running through red lights. On average, 2 people die each day in red light running crashes in the US. Close to $400 million dollars is spent each month on emergency services, In 2021, 1,109 people were killed and 127,000 injured in red light running crashes. Half of those killed were pedestrians, cyclists and people in other vehicles who were hit by the red light runners. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that cameras reduced the fatal red light running crash rate of large cities by 21% and the rate of all types of fatal crashes at signalized intersections by 14%.
